John Sparrow's copy with his small bookplate on the front endpaper. Ink names of former owners on same endpaper. Pages 191-192 missing (?), although contents appear to be complete, irregular pagination. For the most part a nice clean copy.

First edition of The Village Minstrel, Clare's second collection, bound together in contemporary calf with the fourth edition of Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery, the poet's first book, which was first published the previous year. The son of a farm labourer, John Clare (1793-1864) was inspired to become a poet after reading James Thomson's The Seasons. In 1819, in order to forestall his parents' eviction from their home, he offered his own poems to a local bookseller Edward Drury, cousin to John Taylor of the publishers Taylor & Hessey (who had published Keats's poems). The result, Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery, became something of a publishing sensation, with the 1,000 copies of the first edition selling out in two months. Handsomely bound, with attractive provenance First edition of the poet's first book, from the library of Lady Mary Lowther (1781-1862), gifted to her just a few weeks after publication, inscribed on the first blank: "Lady Mary Lowther, 23d of Feb. 1820, from Right Hon. H. Rutherford". Copies of Clare's books in such elegant contemporary morocco bindings are notably uncommon. Lowther was a keen amateur landscape artist, who trained under painters Joseph Farington and Peter De Wint. She and her family were closely associated with William Wordsworth: her father William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844), served as the poet's patron, and is the dedicatee of The Excursion (1814), which opens with a sonnet to the Earl ("Oft, through thy fair domains, illustrious Peer, / In youth I roamed...").
