GOOD /NO DUST JACKET. xlviii, 430 pp. Text clean and unmarked except for previous owner's name in pencil at half-title page. Pages slightly toned. Minor foxing at first and last pages. Light brown cloth boards decorated and lettered in dark brown, lightly soiled, spine darkened. Edges, corners and spine top and tail rubbed. Back hinge cracked, but holding, binding tender, but intact.

Symonds provides a biography and overview of Marlowe's stageworks. Four plays: Tamerlaine (Parts I and II), Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta and Edward the Second. Red soft full-leather binding with gilt titles to the spine. Top page edge gilt, with red marbled pastedowns and endpapers, prev owner's label on front pastedown. With sepia frontispiece of The Birthplace of Marlowe. Condition very good, leather on spine slightly worn, else fine, contents very clean.

1st Edition in this collected format, 1887. Frontispiece portrait of Edward Alleyn with tissue guard. Decorated headers / tailpieces. Good condition, boards a little rubbed, with armorial bookplate of Alfred J Reynolds to front pastedown, hinges cracking (beginning to expose netting beneath), previous sellers pencil note to reverse of front endpaper "First Mermaid issue with the suppressed blasphemy pages", and very occasional marginal pencil annotations.
Includes the first publication of Richard Brome's charges of blasphemy levelled against Marlowe (Pages 428-431). Havelock Ellis' decision to include this apparently offended both J.A Symonds and the publisher, Vizetelly to the extent that this work was withdrawn. Subsequent editions omitted Bromes' note on Marlowe's "damnable opinions", and Vizetelly denounced Ellis for making such 'monstrous abominations......public'.
