Reprint of the 1860 edition (Besterman 1705), one of the bibliographical works awarded a prize by the Bibl. Nac. in Madrid and published at state expense. Basically a biographical, alphabetical dictionary of Spanish dramatists from the 16th to the mid-18th century, with the 17th century predominating. Works by an author are listed under that author's name. About 10,000 unnumbered entries. Entries range in size from several lines to 40 pages, and vary accordingly in contents and format. The 40-page entry (Lope de Vega) contains, among other things, a 4-page biography and a 31-page bibliography of Vega's works, including manuscript items. Works published only as parts of other works are listed by title under the larger works. Another index lists minor forms (preludes, entracts, etc.), with titles, first lines, authors and source. With several additional indexes and appendices. Well preserved copy.
