Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1864. Hardcover. Good. Published 1864, 8vo, original green pebbled cloth, xix, 282 pp, 122 plates. Good copy, tightly bound, gilt lettering on spine almost completely effaced, some glue stains to front pastedown, small ink stain to bottom outer corner up to p. 13, other ink stains in the same part of the page through the first half of the book, going into margin only a few mm. Some foxing to text, but the plates are mainly free of such foxing. Rare book.

Well kept example of this important book on organization and deployment of troops, horses and artillery including cannons, illustrated with the 79 called-for plates plus 8 plates of music for bugle signals that are not included in the table of contents. Brown textured cloth with darkened gilt spine lettering, decorative stamping in blind, 348 pages plus plates. Includes the engraved bookplate of John D. Vautier, Philadelphia, who served in the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteers and who wounded at Cold Harbor in 1864. Some minor fraying to spine ends, good hinges, firm text block, clean pages with some minor uniform age-toning to plates, small coffee colored stain near the bottom of about a half dozen pages near the front of the book, bookplate as noted, no other names or markings.. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
