About This Item

First issue, of seven published, of this early Soviet journal of literature and the arts, which appeared in 1918-1922 and was rather un-Soviet in orientation and design, reflecting the refined aesthetics of the Silver Age instead. One of its key features was a renewed interest in the wood- and linocut medium, with examples by P. Pavlinov, V. Falileev, V. Favorsky in the present issue, as well as the cover illustration ("Broneviki" - "Tanks") by Nikolai Kupreianov (1894-1933), one of the leading practitioners of the genre prior to his shift to more overtly leftist forms. The literary contributions include poems by Konstantin Bal'mont, S. Abramov, Aleksandr Blok, Valerii Briusov, Andrei Globa, Vladimir Khodasevich, Viacheslav Ivanov, prose by Briusov, Pavel Muratov, Mikhail Kuzmin ("Papasha iz dymovoi truby"; first appearance), Aleksei Remizov (the short story "Osiianie"; first appearance), and Abram Efros' striking essay about books and the keenly felt lack thereof in times of revolution ("O knigakh").

As of December 2021, KVK, OCLC appear to show only two non-microfilm holdings in North America.
