London: Rest Fenner, 1817. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5". None. A leather bound first edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Christmas verse play, 'Zapolya'. The first edition of this work. Bound without a half-title. 'Zapolya' is a Christmas verse play, presenting the drama of aab Kiuprili, a heroic chieftain who confronts the usurper of the crown. The play was rejected by the Theatre Royal on Drury lane, and was performed instead at the Surrey Theatre under the production of Thomas Dibdin. Written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, a poet who is known as being one of the founders of the Romantic Movement in literature. His best known works are 'Kubla Khan', 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', and 'Biographia Literaria'. From the library of Jonathan Fletcher Wordsworth, critic and scholar, and descendant of William Wordsworth. In a full calf binding, rebacked with the original boards and spine restored. Some light patches of rubbing to the boards, and minor marks to the boards. Small surface cracks to the boards. Front endpaper and front free endpaper detached but present. Bound without rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some marks. Title page detached but present. Very Good
