The book has been hand signed, inscribed and dated by the author on the title page in black ink. All black and white illustrations are present. There are a couple of minor stains on the end pages. The boards are in good condition with minimal to no wear. The binding is tight and square.

Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 1st Printing 1 This is a RARE second edition of "Discovery of the Yosemite and the Indian War of 1851" written by Lafayette Houghton Bunnell and published in 1880. The book provides an historical account of how Yosemite was discovered in the mid 1800's by the author, who was a member of the 36th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers. The book has a beautifully embossed and gilt decorated cover with numerous illustrations and maps throughout. The book is in very good condition. It measures 5.5" x 7.75".

A well read edition.The Deserted Village is a poem by Oliver Goldsmith published in 1770. It is a work of social commentary, and condemns rural depopulation and the pursuit of excessive wealth. The poem is written in heroic couplets, and describes the decline of a village and the emigration of many of its residents to America. In the poem, Goldsmith criticises rural depopulation, the moral corruption found in towns, consumerism, enclosure, landscape gardening, avarice, and the pursuit of wealth from international trade. The poem employs, in the words of one critic, "deliberately precise obscurity", and does not reveal the reason why the village has been deserted. The poem was very popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but also provoked critical responses, including from other poets such as George Crabbe. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
