About This Item

Sydney: New Holland, 1997. xiv, 257pp, bw ill, maps, endpaper maps. Black cloth in jacket. Near new. In 1797, the merchant vessel Sydney Cove was on a speculative trading voyage from Bengal to Port Jackson. Near the end of the trip the ship foundered off Preservation Island, Bass Strait, in the aftermath of a hurricane. There followed an extraordinary adventure as 17 survivors set out in a longboat, itself wrecked on the Victoria coast, culminating in a 400 mile foot trek to Port Jackson- the first recorded overland expedition of any magnitude by Europeans in Australia which is still largely unrecognised.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Small 4to.
