New York: Virtue and Yorston Two volumes, complete. Three-quarter morocco over pebbled boards, raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to front boards, ruled and tooled, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, (15 x 12 inches). N.D. (no date, circa late 1800's). American edition of the London edition published by Virtue. Volume I: 809 pages, plus Knights 93 page "Biography of William Shakespeare" at rear, illustrated with 30 full-page, steel plate engraving and four portraits; Volume II: 777 pages, with Indices plus second part of Biography at rear, 21 steel plate engravings and 2 portraits. An important study of Shakespeare's life and works, based primarily on the first folio, and beautifully illustrated by leading artists of the day. Both volumes show overall general wear and rubbing, front hinge of volume one starting, aside from a tide stain to prelims of volume one plates are clean with minimal foxing. Remains an attractive set with a strong shelf presence. Leather. Very Good. Elephant Folio.
