Quarto. 4 Volumes in contemporary calf, uniform gilt panelled spine with double gilt-stamped spine labels in crimson and black morocco, bound Cambridge style except for vol. 2 of the Letters which has a blindstamped frame to the covers. THE WORKS, [2 VOLS]: Pp. [30], 408 with folding frontispiece portrait by George Vertue. Published at the age of 29, and although it read vol. 1, it was actually a stand-alone, ESTC - T5389; Vol. 2: Pp. (irregular pagination, though complete with register continuous), [16] includes half-title, title-page printed in black and red and with engraved vignette, separate title-page for "An Essay on Man, Being the First Book of Ethic Epistles. To Henry St. John, L. Bolingbroke dated 1734 with engraved vignette, 66, 19, [24]-33, [6]-[26], [35]-72, [4], [1]-56, 65-91, [1]-12, [1]-17, 81, [1]-201, errata, with numerous engravecd vignettes and typographical ornaments, due to a blunder in the composing room sig. L1 (p. 43/44) repeats the contents of sig. K2 (p. 43/44) so one leaf had to be discarded. In this copy K2 is retained and there is a stub where L1 was excised. ESTC - T5390. Both volumes contain the engraved bookplate of George Simon Harcourt, 2nd Earl Harcourt, 1736-1809. THE WORKS ... IN PROSE: LETTERS OF MR. ALEXANDER POPE AND SEVERAL OF HIS FRIENDS [2 VOLS.]: Pp. [37], 10-196, 189-307, with half-title, engraved portrait illustration to title-page, lovely engraved headpiece to Preface by William Kent, title-page in black only. Offsetting to text, p. 69/70 with small piece missing from lower white-space (text not affected). ESTC - T5515; Vol. 2: Pp. Half-title with directions the the binder on verso, title-page in black only. Includes: Letters to and from Dr. Swift; Thoughts on various subjects; Memoirs ... of Martinus Scriblerus; Martinus Scriblerus or the art of sinking in poetry; The Guardian; A key to the lock. ESTC - N474999. Both volumes contain the engraved bookplate of George Simon Harcourt, 2nd Earl Harcourt (1736-1809), vol. 2 of The Works in Prose also contains the engraved armorial bookplate of "The Most Noble John Duke of Bedford, 1736." A very nice, handsome set.
