A clean early eighteenth century edition of Edmund Waller's poetry in a lovely original binding, with some observations on Waller's poems to the rear. Illustrated, with a portrait frontispiece and a further three plates. The second edition. In a contemporary calf binding. ESTC No. T116988. With a frontispiece and three further plates, one folding (to the rear). With the bookplate of Maurice Baring to the front pastedown and his inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Maurice Baring was an English man of letters. He was also a dramatist, poet, novelist, translator and essayist. He had a wide social circle and associated with the Cambridge Apostles and the Coterie. Edmund Waller was an English poet and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times. His lyrics were admired to excess however soon lost popularity. He was regarded as the pioneer in introducing the classical couplet into English verse as a fashionable form of writing. Waller's poems were heavily read during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with his works running into numerous editions. Dryden was an enthusiastic admirer of Waller's works. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine and board edges. Externally, heavily rubbed to the spine, joints and boards. Cracks to the joints, resulting in the hinges starting but remaining firm. Prior owner's library shelf number written to the spine at the tail. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Maurice Baring. With their signature to the recto of front endpaper. Very Good
