About This Item

Dublin: W. Espy, 1819. Hardcover. Good + overall. Tales of shipwrecks, with the majority of this work devoted to the wreck of the Antelope Packet under Captain Wilson (77pp). The Antelope was built for the British East India Company in 1781 and was wrecked in 1783 near the Pelew Islands (now Palau). With the help of the islanders the Captain and his crew built a new vessel from the boards of the Antelope, and sailed successfully to Macao, bringing with them Prince Lee Boo, one of the first people from the region to visit Britain, about 10 years after Omai.

An additional 9 pages on the follow up visit to Pelew by the East India company, informing the King of the death of his son Lee Boo. The prince died of smallpox in May 1784, just six months after his arrival in London in December.

30 pages on the Loss of the Lady Hobart Packet on an island of ice. In 1803, en route from Halifax to England, the Lady Hobart struck an iceberg off the Newfoundland Banks. The crew and passengers managed to safely reach land near Island Cove in Conception Bay.

45 pages on the Loss of the American Ship Hercules off the east African coast in June 1796 (on the coast of "Caffraria"), under Captain Benjamin Stout, and the subsequent journey overland to the Cape of Good Hope.

16 pages on a 1782 sledging adventure in Labrador, A Wonderful Escape from the Effects of a Storm in a journey over the frozen sea in North America. Includes description of Esquimaux, and a wood block of an Esquimaux dog sled.

12mo, 180pp, frontispiece and 5 black and white wood engraved illustrations in text. Original grey papered boards, sympathetically respined with modern cloth spine. There was a similarly titled book published in Dublin in 1818 by Brett Smith. OCLC 7449691 records 3 copies only.
