About This Item
New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1839. 1st Us Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. Small Octavo. Two volumes in dark green embossed cloth gilt lettered on spine. 341 pp and 339 pp. First American edition (the true first the Uk editon of 1838). Jameson, a successful writer already, came to Canada for only one reason, to get a financial settlement from her estranged husband, Robert Jameson, vice chancellor of Upper Canada. She stayed one year only and this book is the result. Upper Canada she said was "unhappy and mismanged" and Toronto "a little ill-built town on low ground at the bottom of a frozen bay with one very ugly church (St James) and some government offices (Parliament Buildings) in the most tasteless vulgar style imaginable" Ink name on endpapers. Minor edgewear..Head and heel of the spines have some expert almost invisible repairs but otherwise this is a truly fine set. Uncommon.
