About This Item
New York: William Morrow & Company, 1966. Hardcover. Small 4to. Brown cloth spine with ivory lettering and brown paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. 321pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, map endpapers. Very good/very good. Faint foxing to page edges and occasional text pages, else near fine; jacket mildly age toned and lightly edgeworn. A tight and attractive first edition of this John Burroughs Medal-winning nature classic about trekking beaches from Maine to Long Island. Interestingly, famed Louisville newspaper magnate Barry Bingham Sr. (1906-88) boldly inscribes the front flyleaf in black ink to "Mary and Warwick Anderson / from Mary & Barry Bingham / February, 1968." The daughter of the Binghams' close Kentucky friends wed Illinois senator Adlai E. Stevenson III.
