About This Item
London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1947. 1st Edition. Paperback. This booklet contains the first printed appearance of Churchill's speech of 4 October 1947 at the 68th Annual Conservative Party Conference. Two years earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Churchill would head opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister.
At the 68th Annual Conservative Party Conference, Churchill addressed a mass meeting of 2,500 held at The Dome at Brighton at the conclusion of the conference on a Saturday afternoon. This lengthy address appears at pp.114-121 of this 123-page "Verbatim Report of the Proceedings together with the Text of Mr. Churchill's Speech". Also found are comments on how Churchill, his wife, and his speech were received by the crowd.
The booklet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches and is bound in grey card wraps. Condition is good The grey card binding is unfaded and square with clean and complete covers. The spine is all there with no losses, but shows an inch of splits and separation at both spine ends and some wear along the rear hinge. The contents are clean and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The binding is protected with a removable, clear mylar cover. The speech herein was later printed in Europe Unite at pp.147-61 under the title "Annual Conference of the Conservative Party" and later still in Winston S. Churchill: His Complete Speeches, Vol. VII, pp.7528-37 under the title "Conservative Party Annual Conference Address".
