About This Item

London: The Crime Club, Collins, 1934. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 7.5" by 5". None. An uncommon, early edition of this crime fiction novel by Agatha Christie. 'Why Didn't They Ask Evans' is set in Wales and Hampshire. It follows protagonist Bobby Jones and his friend Lady Frances Derwent as they try to solve the murder of a mysterious man found at Jones' local golf course. The victim's final words were 'Why didn't they ask Evans?'.  This work features amateur detectives, which critics saw as a charming change compared to the novels featuring Christie's expert detective Poirot. This copy is an eighth impression, being published six years after the initial printing. In the original 'Uniform Edition' binding, with the original yellow and green dustwrapper unclipped. A bright copy of this stand-alone Christie novel. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart. Bumping to the top right corner of the front board. Slight fading to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Dust wrapper is sound. Large loss to the tail of the spine. Minor chips to the head of the spine. Former owner's inscription in pencil to the recto of front endpaper 'Keith Arrowsmith Read at Abingdon November 1995'. Rear hinge is strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Scattered spotting to pages, heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good

Synopsis

Dame Agatha Christie is the world’s best-known mystery writer. Her books have sold over two billion copies worldwide and have been translated into 44 foreign languages. During a writing career that spanned more than half a century, she created two of the world’s most famous detectives. Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. The author of 79 novels and short story collections, she was also an accomplished playwright--one of her 14 plays, The Mousetrap , is the longest-running play in history. She published six romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott and wrote four non-fiction books, including an autobiography. Several of her books, including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile , were made into hugely successful films. She died in 1976.
