About This Item
(London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1964). Translated from the French by Patrick O'Brian. 8vo; original brown boards, lettered in silver gilt on spine; tinted top edge; dustwrapper; pp. 228, incl. index; plates; maps and diagrams. Dustwrapper slightly sunned and edgeworn; gift inscription to front free endpaper; a little spotting to fore-edge. Very good condition. "Tazieff is ... concerned in discovering what causes an earthquake, how the stresses are built up under the earth's surface, what the effect is on the terrain and the inferences which can be drawn from his observations as to the nature and structure of this planet. The opening detailed account of the 1960 Chile disaster, and the descriptions of volcanic disturbances in the closing section remind us of the forces beneath the thin crust of the earth which we forget, because we are lucky enough not to live in either of the two long narrow zones in which all but one per cent of the world's earthquakes occur." .
