New York: Random House, 1941. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (21cm); two-tone navy and light blue cloth, with titling and rule stamped in gilt on spine and covers; grey topstain; dustjacket; [vi],303,[3]pp. Forward lean, gentle sunning to spine, with some rubbing to gilt; contents clean; Very Good+. In the second issue dustjacket, with five blurbs on rear panel; price-clipped, modest edgewear, with several small tears and attendant creases, and two clear tape mends on verso; Very Good+. Schulberg's first book, "a sharp, realistic picture of many-sided Hollywood, focused on a Jew who rises from childhood in a New York slum to power and prominence as a movie produced" (Coan, p.112). Sammy Glick, an opportunist whose chief ambition is to rise to the top of the Hollywood heap, "moves like a tank toward his goal, crushing everyone in his path, friend and foe alike" (BAIRD 2214).
