New York: J. & J. Harper, 1832. First Edition. First printing, signed as noted in BAL. 12mo (19cm) in 2 vols. In original printed green muslin cloth, BAL binding variant A; plain endpapers; 8pp of publisher's ads at rear; vol I: 203pp; vol. II: 196, [8]pp. Bindings tender but holding, cloth showing general mild wear and discoloration, with one-inch split to front joint of vol. 1; mild internal foxing, one-cm hole to front flyleaf of vol. 2, rear pastedown neatly detached from board as though glue failed; Good to Very Good.
With the embossed ownership mark of Frederick Robie, 39th Governor of Maine, and other 1942 ownership inscriptions. A novel set on the Kentucky frontier, with characters reminiscent of Davy Crockett. Paulding, a prolific author (and Secretary of the Navy under Martin Van Buren) worked to encourage distinctive American literature, and collaborated with Washington Irving on Salmagundi in 1807-08 (ANB). BAL 15715.
