About This Item

Los Angeles: Automobile Club of Southern California, 1954., 1954. First edition. First Edition. One of 100 Copies produced specifically for the Zamorano Club. Illustrated Boards with Cloth spine. 63pp. Illustrated with 28 Half-Page Maps. A wonderful presentation of the many important routes of exploration, transportation, and trade in the Southwest. "In 1932 a map of exploration in the American Southwest was projected but production costs were prohibitive and the publication, of necessity, was deferred. In 1949, the project was revived in a revised form and Westways engaged J. Gregg Layne, distinguished western historian, to prepare a series of 28 maps, with accompanying historical essays, covering the principal routes of trade and exploration in the American Southwest, beginning with Pike's 1806 expedition and concluding with the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869. Mr. Layne completed the last of the articles shortly before his death August 16, 1952, and they were published regularly in Westways between January 1950 and September 1952. Now the articles have been brought together in collected form in this book." Each map shows the route in color and is accompanied by a 2-page general description of the importance of the Route that is depicted. Light sunning to upper portion and along fore-edge of spine, else a fine copy.
