A very well-made book, with thirty-one full page illustrations, title page and many llustrations in two colors, set in Founder's Caslon, a new and authentic digital version of Updike's favorite typeface. "A substantial collection of all of Updike's writings on the arts of the book". Updike was proprietor of the Merrymount Press in Boston and is often described as "the most distinguished American printer". Also, according to jacket flap, he can "lay claim to being one of the most successful and influential book designers of the twentieth century". Binding in gray cloth with gilt lettering and decorations, in pristine condition. Paper cover in very good condition, but with a slight fold in corner of inside flap. Inside pages clean and bright. A lovely book, edited by William S. Peterson.. First Edition. Cloth. As New/Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall.
