London: John Lehman,1946. Hardback. Good. Some fading to book covers and spine. First blank end page somewhat foxed. No DW. No inscriptions or annotations. 351 pages.Over 5" by 7.5". Later edition of book first published in English translation in1933 by the Hogarth Press of Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Bunin's only long novel which was also known as 'The Life of Arseniev'. The author was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1933, making Bunin the first Russian writer to be so honoured. Newspaper clipping from TLS of book review of a study of Bunin's fiction by James B. Woodward is enclosed. Two extracts from the latter are as follows: "No one has caught more brilliantly the act of falling in love, the fever chart of infatuation, or the blow to the heart of separation. He is the poet of the coup de foudre." This translation is described as "a masterly English version... of his lyrical autobiographical account of childhood and youth on a manorial estate in Central Russia." .
