New York: Appleton & Co.. Very Good+. 1864. Hardcover. A grand edition, dark brown embossed leather. Both covers are gilt stamped. Inner dentelle. Raised bands, panels with geometric gilt designs. All edges gilt. Marble endpaper. Including frontispiece all 36 engravings are tissue protected. Interior of text is tight, clean & intact. Pages 148-149 have a darkened area from laid-in newsprint. A few flecks of foxing on page margins: does not affect the portrait engravings. From original paintings by eminent artists-engraved under the superintendence of Charles Heath. Prior owners slightly faded Inscription. First published in London in 1841. Literature, Poetry, Art, Fine Binding; Engraved Portraits; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 230 pages .
