Description:
1935. Kent, Rockwell. Watercolor on paper measuring 13 by 9 1/4 inches, signed by Kent in the lower right margin, along with the inscription, "to his friend Charly Mortensen, 1935." Mortensen was the telegraph operator aboard the Hans Egede, the ship on which Kent made two of his three celebrated voyages to Igdlorssuit, Greenland, where he would live off and on between 1929 and 1935. His life and work among the native Greenlanders during these years resulted in two of his greatest books: Greenland Journal and Salamina. The present painting, a moving, somber work executed in the artist's typically realistic style, depicts a European sailor, presumably preparing to depart Greenland for home, comforting a native Greenlander who is weeping into her hands at the prospect of their parting. The watercolor is accompanied by Mortensen's autograph book, which contains numerous drawings and inscriptions by friends and Hans Egede passengers, including two drawings by Kent, both signed. One drawing, a charming,…

1956. Bemelmans, Ludwig. Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 11 by 8 1/2 inches (28x22cm). Matted and framed. Signed by Bemelmans. This shoulder-length portrait of Bemelmans's most enduring character is done in the later, bold style encountered in Madeline and the Bad Hat, and it shows red-headed Madeline wearing her characteristic wide-brimmed hat trimmed with a blue ribbon and high-collared shirt with a blue neckpiece. Although Bemelmans was quite prolific, original drawings of Madeline seldom appear on the market. Slight mat burn, else fine in a lightly worn wood frame, painted pink to complement the color of Madeline's rosy cheeks.

Description:
This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet," "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears," "Whitetail: King of the Forest," "The Three Puppies," "The Small One," "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg," "The Bluebird," "The Night Before Christmas," "The Enchantment of Santa Claus," "The Christ Child," "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens," "Polly Parrot," "Piccolino," "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near-complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko," written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book, from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages (front board graphic, frontispiece, pages 21 and 31). Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards, most with typeset text blocks,…

Description:
1947. Oil on canvas by Cummings, who did not title his paintings; the title given here is purely descriptive. 18" x 24". "By E.E. Cummings" written on the wood frame, apparently in another's hand. Cummings signed only a small fraction of his work, deliberately and for philosophical reasons: he believed the work should stand on its own -- and be judged on its own merits or faults -- rather than be judged by who the creator of it was. When he backed away from the New York art scene in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Cummings was backing away from what he considered to be an artistic milieu driven by personality and ego rather than by art. After his early period as an abstract artist, he focused on representational art for the rest of his life, but often -- as in this painting -- he used a palette and a style that owed much to his early influences among modern artists: Cezanne, Matisse, and the Fauvists. One tack missing from the top of the stretched canvas; else fine. No Binding. Near Fine.
