About This Item
Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Tim Walsh, with all best wishes, Bill Green (April 1996)." Uncommon signed. This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1996. Green is a geochemist, a professor emeritus at Miami University in Ohio, and this book shares his science and self-discovery in Antartica where he studied lakes devoid of life. From the jacket: "Water, Ice and Stone is a rare achievement in the literature of science. It finds spiritual exhilaration rooted in the elements of the earth; it conveys the joy and passion that scientists feel for their work; and it elegantly brides the gulf that separates the literary and scientific sensibilities." A very near fine copy with faint soiling to lower edges of paper boards; in a near fine jacket with some light creasing to top of spine, one pinhead scratch to front outer corner. With a gold "John Burroughs Association" award winner sticker on the lower rear cover (an odd place for it).
