About This Item

London: Adam and Charles Black, 1906 372pp + foldout map + 8pp ads. Reprint of 1912. Sales Agents listed for America, Australia, Canada and India. Printed by R. & R. Clark Ltd., Edinburgh. Contains 75 full page color illustrations, with labeled tissue guards. Publisher's original trade blue cloth binding with floral design in yellow and greens. Titles, standards and top edge are gilt. **CONDITION: Good. Both the covers and spine remains bright. There is a notable crease to front board, and a four inch vertical break to rear board, however. Some edgewear to corners and rubbing at head of spine. Front hinge damaged, and rear is less so. Otherwise, internally the colors remain bright and item is clean. Browning, as expected, to end papers and flies but no foxing apparent. Rear fly is chipped. Interior age toning is mild, and interior text is clean. Still, this maintains shelf appeal and readability despite any faults. **English Artist Frederick Whitehead R.B.A., (1853-1938) provides some particularly lovely and bright watercolor and oil images in this volume of castles, churches and domestic architecture, many with animal accessories. Of interest to the literary-minded, illustrations include two scenes of Stratford-on-Avon, as well as the home of George Eliot. Whitehead was also a friend of Thomas Hardy. He, and his fellow-artist sister, trained in France, and upon return to Britain, spent part of the year travelling and painting plein-air from a caravan called "The Rambler." Author Clive Holland (1866-1959) trained as a barrister, but later worked as a journalist, novelist and playwright for a period spanning over fifty years. Inman #87.. Hard Cover. Good.
