About This Item

Norman; (1965): University of Oklahoma Press. First Edition. Octavo. 378 pages, index. In July, 1781, the Quechan Indians wiped out two small Spanish settlements that had been established among them a few months earlier. The Fransican friars Francisco Garces, Juan Diaz, Matias Moreno, and Juan Barreneche were killed, as were most of the Spanish soldiers and colonists. In retelling this often-told tale, besides the three maps, there are important photographs in sections throughout the book. Forbes makes good use of old sources and takes advantage of a host of documentary data turned up in his research. A fine copy bund in brown cloth lettered in gilt, spine gilt, in a clipped near fine dust jacket.
