A history of the beginning of pictorial war journalism in the 19th century by reporters armed with pencils and sketchbooks and providing words and drawings on the Crimean War and U.S. Civil War as well as other conflicts of the period for such as the "Illustrated London News" and "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper." 191 pages, including an introduction detailing the development of 19th century war reporting, a bibliography and an index, with most of the pages devoted to the work of over 60 artists and numerous examples of their work. The artists range from anonymous reporters to the famous, such as Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington. The bottom edge of the text is ink-stamped "Not For Resale," o/w text and boards are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The dustjacket shows a one-inch closed tear near the top corner of the front panel, o/w no significant flaws, no other tears, no creasing or chipping, not price-clipped. A collectable copy.
