About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1844-1845. First edition of this enthralling serially published novel. Octavo, three volumes, bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. In very good condition. Eugene Sue was one of several authors that popularized the genre of the serial novel in France; his 'The Mysteries of Paris' and 'The Wandering Jew' were widely popular if controversial for their strong socialist and anti-clerical subtexts. In 'The Wandering Jew,' two siblings, one a princess of the Herodian dynasty of Judea and the other a personification of cholera, are condemned to roam the earth and protect the Rennepont family, Huguenots persecuted by the Jesuits, until all of the family have disappeared.
