The bindings of the text volumes are generally in good condition, although they do show some chipping, scratches and washed-out areas on the covers. The gilt frames are partly gone, and the headcaps of volumes 1, 2 and 4 are missing. The contents are generally clean, although there are occasional minor blemishes. The atlas is internally in very good condition, despite some occasional age toning. The large general map of the Russian Empire exhibits minor wear at the folds.
Notes: Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811), a German naturalist and explorer, was commissioned by the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg to lead one of the most significant scientific expeditions ever sent, initiated by Catherine II, to explore the vast Russian Empire. Many of its regions remain poorly understood. This work presents a summary of Pallas's discoveries in southern Russia. His travels throughout the immense Russian Empire led to advances in science in many fields, including palaeontology, geography, geology, ethnography and linguistics.
