About This Item

London and New York: Macmillan and Co, 1886. Revised. Hardcover. Very Good. Wilhelm Meyer's Xylographic Institute (engravings). Small 8vo. Pp. 413. [4], 413, followed by 322 pp. of publisher's titles. Frontis. photo port. of Nordenskiold, with tissue guard. With 186 intertextual and full-plate wood cuts, after photos. Bound in dark green cloth with a globe stamped in black on front board, gilt lettering, rules and a polar bear vignette stamped on spine. Of three color lithographed maps called for, one is lacking. Light wear to corners, minor lean to book yet tight binding, bookplate and owner name, moderate foxing, notably to preliminaries. Withal, a sturdy copy with attractive shelf appeal. The preferred edition, as it contains the the whole narrative of the North-East Passage, as well as Nordenskiold's year among the Chukches. In addition, the translation is revised and measurements are reduced to English terms.

From the polar collection of John M. Levinson, physician and Explorers Club president (1985-1987). As much an anthropological expedition as a geographical or natural-resource exploration, Nordenskiold scouted the North-East Passage, Chukches, Yenisei, Siberia, Novya Zemla and, briefly, Japan.
