Illustrated throughout with photogravure frontispiece to both volumes, volume I with seven colour plates, 16 in text illustrations, 84 black and white plates (with 121 illustrations) and three maps (one double page). Volume II with six colour plates, four double page plates, 83 black and white plates (with 116 illustrations) and two maps. Fold out map in pocket to the rear of both volumes. A very good copy, the bindings square and firm, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities, a few nicks to the bottom of the spine of volume II and rubbing to the gilt medallions. The cloth has white marks on both volumes, predominantly to the fore-edge of the upper board on volume II. The contents, with a pencil inscription to the front free endpaper of both volumes and a few prelim pages remaining uncut, are foxed to all edges of the closed text block and around the margins of the pages throughout. An account of Scott's first expedition to Antarctica (1901 - 1904), which was the first British exploration of the region in over 60 years. The expedition travelled 300 miles further south than anyone previously. Including observations of Antarctic climate, fauna, zoology and geology carried out during the expedition, with 12 plates in facsimile from Dr. Edward Wilson's sketches, panoramas and maps. 3000 copies are said to have been printed of the first edition, however this may include other forms of the two volume first edition (Rosove 286).
