A novel set in Gibraltar where author Anthony Burgess (1917 - 1993) completed his service as a sargent-major. While the story was written in 1949, it was not published until some 16 years latter. This brilliant & hilarious wartime novel stars Sergeant Richard Ennis, assigned to conducting classes at the Detention Barracks on Gibraltar --- Ennis is irrepressable, and will re-appear in the author's works, notably in The Worm and the Ring.
