Volumes I and II are titled on the spine: "Clayton Agt. Bollingbroke". Following the publication of the final volume of this work, which was considered by some to contain heretical attacks on the Trinity, Clayton was censured by the church. Upon being told of his imminent prosecution he was seized by a nervous fever, of which he apparently died in February, 1758..
