About This Item

Amsterdam: Maaskamp, 1815. sewn card covers (cover title "de Bataille vas det Schoon Verbond met de Marsch en Aval der Franschen . . . etc.") 1p (explanation of the plan) +61pp+3pp+11pp. 2 hand-colored fold-out maps of the battlefield with another fold-out engraving ("Afbeelding van het huis, gezegt het Schoon Verbond . . ") small portrait engraving of Wellington on the title page; at some early stage tissue was affixed to card covers, tissue now browned and chipped at edges, but card covers remain very good with minimal edgewear; uncut pages. 'Schoon Verbond' is the earliest Dutch translation of the Prussian term 'Belle Alliance,' used for the Battle of Waterloo. It is also the name of the small farm in the Province of Brabant, Belgium (the subject of the engraving) which was at the center of the French position in the battle and Napoleon's headquarters (The British designated the battle 'Waterloo' after the small town where Wellington had his headquarters, thinking that a name calling to mind the enemy command post was unsuitable.) This is an exceptionally clean and stable copy, with virtually no foxing, marks or staining; the maps and engraving are very clean and bright; an exceptionally scarce and desirable piece of Napoleonic history; very few copies are left in private hands, and only a small number in libraries this copy is from the collection of Edward Lathem, longtime director of the Dartmouth College Libraries photos and provenance on request
