About This Item
[Canada, 2007]: Fifth House. Qusrto. 344 pages. The definitive study of Canada's first transcontinental railway which came almost twenty years after the U.S. version and a more fascinating project. It was the new country's first critical national project and was a challenge to the railroad engineers covering nearly 3,000 miles. Much of the terrain was unexplored and seemingly impossible to cross. The manager, William C. van Horne, came from the middle west of the U.S. There is a smaller edition of 304 pages but this edition with hundreds of photographs including many which had been recently discovered in 1972 and had been previously unknown. There are maps of each phase of the lines. Essential not only for those who study railroad history but also the hard-core industrial archaeologist. The appendices include a full list of stations, the origin of their name and a genealogy of each section of the line. Bound in red cloth, spine lettering silver, in a pictorial dust jacket lettered in red and black light bumper to upper corner, jacket has a few scratches and one tiny, closed edge tear. A clean bright copy nearly fine.
