About This Item
Chapel Hill, North Carolina: The University of North Carolina Press, 1971. SIGNED BY AUTHOR to front endpaper with inscription 'To Donald Maclaren of Maclaren with much affection from his father's friend'. xvii + 253 pages. 13 illustrations. Francis Picken Miller (1895-1978), whose career had many facets: statesman, politician, soldier, educator, author, and churchman. His contacts have been worldwide. Born in Kentucky of venerablePresbyterian Huguenot, and Scotch-Irish stock, he was reared in the valley of Virginia. After graduation from Washington and Lee University in 1914, he served until 1917 as national secretary of the Y.M.C.A. for private preparatory schools. In 1917 and 1918, he saw action as an artilleryman with the First Division in France and after the war attended Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. Although a layman, Miller was deeply concerned with the place of Christianity in modern society. He was chairman of the World's Student Christian Federation, 1928-1938, and a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches, 1954-1960. During the Second World War he served as a colonel on General Eisenhower's staff at S.H.A.E.F. and was decorated by the American, British, French and Belgian governments. C3D. Signed by Author.
