About This Item
Turin ('Torino'): Stabilimento Tipografico Fontana, 1845. 1st ed. . Leather sp., black cl.boards. 18 Cms x 27 Cms. Text in Italian. 432 pp., 35 col. plates with tissue guards (bar one); back cover and spine virtually detached (held at top front spine by tape used to secure front cover down internal gutter, spine ends chipped, scattered white surface rubbing to both boards; internally front end-paper diagonally creased and tanned, remainder of text generally clean and tight, early small blue stamp of Jersey City N.J. Free Public Library to t.p. and verso all plates; front endpaper has prev. owner's pencilled plate-collation notes and date 'Sotheby 3/2/87 Lot 97' with incomprehensible long word above, the plates are esentially complete and p.o. has ticked them on final page list, one listed plate seems never to have been bound in (facing p.42) but 3 others unlisted, these are all in excellent condition, tissue guards have varying degrees of tanning from heavy to virtually none, text occ. has marginal tanning and heavier tanning on pp.250-258 (perhaps elsewhere too), some plates have very faint marginal tannng as well. Textblock itself is tight with no obvious gutter openings, but top edge has some ingrained dustiness. Book itself contains extensive anthropological, ethnographic and cultural information. Clearly requires rebinding, but would rate contents VG for age and type of content, Weighs over 1.2 kg so allow for extra postage, especially outside UK. Scarce outside Italy. Although t.p. gives Dally as a Professor in Paris and that Cibrario translated this ('traduzione') listed copies of volumes in this series and full sets all appear to be Italian.
