About This Item

East Hartford, Connecticut: The Calvin Picone Studio [for] Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Division of United Aircraft Corporation, 1946. Illustrated wraps. Very Good.

Photographically illustrated stapled wraps, die-cut in the shape of a propeller hub. Unpaginated, though 32 pp. Illustrated throughout, mostly with b/w half-tone photographic images. 9.25 by 9.25.  (n. d.). Ca 1946.

General hand wear and soiling. Carefully kept.. The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 aircraft engine, introduced in 1939, would go on to power many of the famous WWII fighter aircraft, such as the F4U Corsair, which was the first aircraft to exceed 400 mph in level flight.

Other aircraft to use this engine include the "Grumman F6F Hellcat, the US Army Air Forces' Republic P-47 Thunderbolt (which uniquely, for single-engined aircraft, used a General Electric turbocharger), the twin-engine Martin B-26 Marauder and Douglas A-26 Invader, as well as the first purpose-built twin-engine radar-equipped night fighter, the Northrop P-61 Black Widow." [Wiki]

Here, after the war, Pratt & Whitney extolls the virtues, and recent modifications, of the "CA" Double Wasp, the civilian version of the R-2800.

Uncommon item documenting this WWII era workhorse aircraft powerplant, with OCLC recording just 4 holding institutions.
