FROM THE PREFACE: "This study is the result of ten years of investigation. It began in 1948 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, a paraplegic center for the Veterans Administration. Here certain anatomical changes were noted in the relationship of the ureter to the bladder wall through which it passed. These observations led to the development of the ureterovesical plastic operation that has proved highly successful in the correction of reflux."

JOHN A. HUTCH (1922-1972) is internationally recognized as one of the pioneers in defining the importance of vesicoureteral reflux in the pathogenesis of pyelonephritis. He was the first to develop a serious technique for repair of vesicoureteral reflux, which opened the door for a more refined understanding of the pathophysiology of this. problem. A second interest was the anatomy, physiology, and embryology of the lower urinary tract, especially the bladder outlet and the base plate as he described it. He was an original thinker, and his death in 1972 at age 50 was a great loss to the field.
