Classic reprint of the original 1872 historical text written by the "Father of the Underground Railroad", an American abolitionist and successful Philadelphia businessman who was born a free man, Still helped hundreds of slaves to escape to freedom (as many as 60 slaves a month) in the years before the Civil War ended slavery. Text contains Stills' meticulous records he maintained during the course of his work with the Pennsylvania Antislavery Society and the Underground Railroad, including short biographies and interviews of many of the escaped slaves; letters and communiques with many people whom he acted as a middleman in communications between escaped slaves and those left behind; stories of the hardships, despair, fear and jubilation of hundreds of runaway slaves; the organization's activities; etc. 780 pp. Illustrated with 70 reproduced engravings, originals by Bensell, Schell,and others.
