About This Item

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Stackpole Books. 1978. Octavo (7 x 5 ½) 191 pp. including index. Tying sequence black and white photos and text drawings. The book lists more of Polly's excellent fly creations. Limited Edition. Book number 109 of 300 copies published. Signed by Polly on the limitation page. Also inscribed and signed by Polly Rosborough on the half-title page to Bob Wethern. Bob Wethern was editorial advisor for Champoeg Press for many years, and he shepherded through to completion George Grant’s two books published by Champoeg in 1980/81, as well as other titles. He also accepted Polly’s ms. "Reminiscences From 50 Years of Flyrodding" in 1980 for critical review and publication by Champoeg. After critiquing Polly’s ms., and returning it to him, Polly exploded in a rage-filled letter to Bob, refusing to accept the re-arranging of chapters or suggestions about grammatical changes. Their friendship fairly well expired at that point. I will enclose a Champoeg Press Newsletter in which Bob wrote the following "Fanciers of The Fuzzy Nymph world of E. H. 'Polly' Rosborough will have to wait for his published memoirs, we are sorry to report. Polly’s self-censored manuscript still left something more than I-dotting and t-crossing, in our humble opinion, and at last report our colorful old friend was contemplating the 'vanity press' route that brought him so much success in the first place. Good luck, Polly!" The inscription in this book was penned by Polly a few years before the ms. submission. With the book’s prospectus laid-in. The book is bound in full green morocco with gilt titles. Colored end papers showing the Rosborough flies and titles. A "Golden Stone" nymph dressed by Polly Rosborough is mounted in a recess mount on the front cover. All edges gilt. Clear plastic dust jacket. A nice book, as nice as you’ll see. Fine in a fine dust jacket. .

About Bruce Cave Fine Fly Fishing Books

Bruce Cave Fine Books specializes in quality fishing books – particularly fly fishing for trout, steelhead, Pacific and Atlantic salmon, striped, black, and smallmouth bass plus any other fish that’ll eat a well-dressed fly; fresh and salt water fishing anywhere on the planet, ranging from picky rainbows in the North Fork of the Feather River near Chester in Northern California to five hundred pound river monsters at Cao Lh in the Mekong Delta. That’s me in the top photo at age 10 in 1957 on the steps of our now gone cabin at Prattville on the west shore of Lake Almanor (it was elegant) – I’m holding the largest trout I’ve ever caught (seven pounds), and needed my grandfather’s helping hand to do it; that fish caught my imagination. And that’s me in the second photo taken in late October 2014 on the same cabin steps, 57 years later, holding an imaginary fish. Between the intervening years I realized that reading about fishing could be nearly as good as fishing itself. I also came to know that fly fishing can be a metaphor for life; there are those moments in fishing that require neither stream nor fish, and sometimes the least important thing about fly fishing is the fishing. Now it’s catch and release for the most part – time spent in rivers and lakes together with age encourages it. Fly fishing is timeless; fishermen aren’t. I think Robert Traver had it right: I fish ‘because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid’; and I ‘don’t regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly so much fun.' A life of fly fishing is beautiful and simple. I’m always interested in purchasing good books, booklets, pamphlets, catalogues, brochures and other ephemera on these subjects and encourage you to either email me at brucecave@comcast.net or telephone 916.728.5019. Sincerely, Bruce Cave.
