First American hardcover edition, published by Farrar, Strais and Giroux, 1987. Translated from the French by the author with Walter Kaiser. The dust jacket is not price clipped. Not a remainder copy. A collection of three novellas, all of which are set in the late Renaissance; 'An Obscure Man', 'Anna..Soror'. Also includes a lengthy 'Postfaces' section in which the author discusses each work. Red-brown boards over black cloth covered spine, with the title and author imprinted on the spine in gold. Boards are flat and the corners are not bumped or creased. No edge wear. sewn binding is tight and square. Edges of the text block show a couple dots of staining - one to the fore edge about the size of a pencil point, one to the top edge about the size of a sesame seed. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Jacket has been protected with a clear, removable cover. Attached photo is of the copy we have in our inventory, not a stock photo.
