Rochefort, 1829. Letter. Near Fine. No Binding. Both Rochefort, 27 and 28 December 1849. Each Large Octavo (ca. 25,5 x 19,5 cm). Each 2 pp. Brown ink on laid paper. Mild fold marks and creases, otherwise very good letters. Two interesting letters giving an early mention of the French rule on the Marquesas Islands. The author, most likely addressing Vice-Admiral Le Blanc, Maritime Prefect of the Rochefort's port, and Admiral Guy-Victor Duperré (1775-1846), tries to convince them to grant him an officer position in the French garrison on the Marquesas. "Out of three regiments, of all adjutant captains, who live in France, I am one of the most senior officers, who has never been in the service in the colonies. Admiral, possibilities to go at war are very rare in the naval infantry, you may let me at least expose myself to some perils once my turn has come, and as I am entitled to it by right." [from the letter to Le Blanc] "In 1839, when you were the Minister of the Navy, it was in the most favourable manner that you welcomed a request of mine about a transfer from infantry regiments to the navy regiments <...> Admiral, that notable preferential treatment of yours makes me look for any opportunity to bring out greater services. A battalion has just been assigned to garrison in the Marquesas Islands. For a reason I cannot fathom out and contrary to orders, a captain adjutant-major, whose departure should not precede mine, has been appointed to join that battalion. I hold the most senior-ranking position of all adjutant-majors living in France and who have never served in the colonies. Either that right has been forgotten or it is not very well known. Admiral, the kindness you expressed in 1839 lets me hope that still today relying on your benevolent protection, I might get from the ministry a right of recall. Admiral Le Blanc, Rochefort's port admiral, to whom I forwarded my complaint through official channels, has allowed me to have it recognized." [from the letter to Duperre]. "The American Maritime Fur Trader Joseph Ingraham first visited the northern Marquesas while commanding the brig Hope in 1791, giving them the name Washington Islands. In 1813, Commodore David Porter claimed Nuku Hiva for the United States, but the United States Congress never ratified that claim, and in 1842, France, following a successful military operation on behalf of a native chief (named Iotete) who claimed to be king of the whole of the island of Tahuata, took possession of the whole group, establishing a settlement (abandoned in 1859) on Nuku Hiva. French control over the group was re-established in 1870, and later incorporated into the territory of French Polynesia" (Wikipedia). .

n.d. [17th Cent.]. Exotic. Very Good +. 8 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches. 32 unnumbered leaves, 3 partly excised. Manuscript of the Carthusian Kalendar for January 1 through May 10 in Latin, possibly near Segovia, Spain, in more than one neat contemporary hand. Bound in full modern sealskin with fur by John Field (with binder's ticket). Provenance: Library of Harry and Virginia Walton. Harry and Virginia Walton were lifelong residents of Covington, Virginia, a small town in the Allegheny Mountains. Harry was a graduate of Lynchburg College, and Virginia was a graduate of the Lynchburg General School of Nursing. Although largely unknown to the general public, the Waltons' reputation as collectors was widely respected in bibliophile and academic circles, and items from their collection were exhibited at numerous colleges, universities and art centers. After their deaths, the original Walton collection was the subject of a series of very successful auctions in New York and London. John Field was an expert… Read More

Description:
Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 170 page manuscript. Contemporary half speckled sheep, marbled sides. Several contemporary sheets of manuscript with mathematical notations loosely inserted. Corners repaired, a little wear and some discolouration to boards, endpapers tanned, contents with the occasional light spot but overall quite clean. Very good condition. An elegant, substantial early-19th century manuscript containing practical mathematical and astronomical problems likely produced by a student of navigation. The majority of the text is from John Bonnycastle''s A Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, originally published in 1806. Bonnycastle was a respected mathematics teacher who tutored the children of the aristocracy and taught at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. A man of "considerable classical and general literary culture", he was a great friend of Fuseli and also of Leigh Hunt, who included Bonnycastle in his book Lord Byron and Some of His Contemporaries.… Read More

Description:
Durham, England, 1681; Final concord Latin indenture in highly mannered Gothic style, executed at the court of Durham during the reign of Charles II on the 26th day of May in the year 1681 before three identified justices and the Mayor of the City Of Durham. Plaintiff is John Garstell, deforciants are Mary Hopper and Anthony Craggs and wife Amice. At issue is a tenement comprised of messuage, an orchard, twenty acres of land, twenty acres of meadow, and twenty acres of pasture, together with all goods and appurtenances, at Wiserley, Weardale township, in the parish of Wolsingham, County Durham. A sum of 160 silver marks was paid, suggesting this property was almost certainly a freehold. Indeed the names of John Gastell, Anthony Craggs and John Hopper appear as Wolsingham freeholders for 1685 in H. Conyers Surtees’ "History Of The Parish Of Wolsingham." Freeholds in Wolsingham were scarce, as the vast majority of lands were retained by the See of the Bishop of Durham. Manuscript… Read More

Description:
THOMPSON, Ruth Plumly. Typed manuscript with handwritten corrections and changes for an unpublished book titled Wooden Animals I Have Known. 40 letter-sized (8½" x 11") sheets. Loose sheets of typescript loosely laid in to a construction paper folder with a pictorial label affixed to the front. Some hand-written corrections and changes in pencil. Wear, chipping and a few small, closed tears around edges of covers, hole evident where sheets had previously been held down by a fastener, else a clean manuscript.
A manuscript for an unpublished book of poems by Oz author Ruth Plumly Thompson, probably submitted to Volland for publication, but ultimately not produced. The title sheet appears to be a carbon, while all the other sheets appear to be the original typescripts. A series of charming poems about various toy wooden animals that the author has encountered over the course of her life, with delightful anecdotes and even a few poems about wooden objects that aren't animals, like "An Old Broomstick."… Read More

British airship commander, the first to use a British airship on patrol in World War One and the first to make a transatlantic airship flight in 1919. ALS, 2pp (single leaf), 4½" X 7½", Cardington, England, 1930 February 25. Addressed to the librarian of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Near fine. Single original mailing fold. Blind-embossed crest. Boldly penned in blue fountain pen from the "Royal Airship Works," Scott transmits "the 'Royal Aeronautical Society' Journal, of November 1929 [not present], which include a copy of the lecture I gave before the Society, on the subject of 'Handling & Mooring of Airships'...." Handsomely signed in full. Scott was killed eight months later in the spectacular crash of the airship R 101 in northern France -- which signaled the end of Britain's interest in dirigibles. Extremely scarce in this form, especially with dirigible content.

Description:
When France's King Henry II died in 1559 and his sickly 15-year-old heir Francis II followed the next year, the throne went to 10-year-old Charles Maximilian, who became Charles IX; his mother, Catherine de' Medici, dominated his reign, which is noted for the Wars of Religion and for the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. Partial vellum DS, 1p, 11" X 8", n.p., n.y. [September 1570 lightly pencilled in another hand]. Very good. Folds and mild bit of wear evident, but overall handsome and boldly penned. Though penned in difficult early French (which is to modern French what Elizabethan English is to modern English) and not accompanied by a translation, this is a probate approval legal document. Below six lines of finely penned legalese, Charles signs at left with his usual enormous signature in a different and somewhat lighter ink. Below this appears another sentence in a large flamboyant hand (which appears to refer to Provence) and huge ornate signature of an official. This atmospheric… Read More

Description:
Small Octavo. Latin manuscript is written in poetic style by C.P.F. Kurrer who was a distinguished member of the famed Latin Society of Jena. 89p. OCLC notes that a 16-page edition was published in Tubingen by Fues in 1786. This much larger version of several thousand lines is entirely handwritten in Latin poetic style. As William Clark as noted in his Charismata and the Origin of Research Universities, p. 158ff., "The Latin Society of Jena (founded 1733) ..required members to submit written dissertations exhibiting eloquence and erudition." This was, of course, in contrast to the universities which like their English counterparts were still under the domain of the Aristotelian dominance through the Middle Ages and into the Early Modern period. These highly literate societies which existed outside the university system of rote memory became (as Clark noted) the predecessor of the modern university system with seminars and original research. The Societas Latina Jenensis according to the Scholarly… Read More
