Early stiff paper wrapper. Spine title hand lettered. Date 1763 in manuscript on title page. Woodcut rococo Sessa family printer's device of a cat with mouse on title. Old stain from candle wax is apparent on approximately 20 leaves. Good. M. T. Cicero (106â "43 BC) was a Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, philosopher, writer and Academic skeptic. His extensive writings include treatises on rhetoric, philosophy and politics. He is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order and was educated in Rome and in Greece. He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order, and served as consul in 63 BC. His influence on the Latin language was immense. He wrote more than three-quarters of extant Latin literature that is known to have existed in his lifetime, and it has been said that subsequent prose was either a reaction against or a return to his style, not only in Latin but in European languages up to the 19th century. These Tusculan Disputations written by Cicero, around 45 BC were an attempt to popularize Greek philosophy in Ancient Rome. It is so called as it was reportedly written at his villa in Tusculum in 45 BC. His daughter had recently died and in mourning Cicero devoted himself to philosophical studies. They consist of five books: On the contempt of death; On pain; On grief; On emotional disturbances; and whether Virtue alone is sufficient for a happy life. SAFE ALDUS 1. Hardcover. Good.
