About This Item

London: Printed for W. Rogers, 1708. The Fourth Edition Corrected. Full Leather. Very Good. Octavo. Two parts in one, with separate title pages and pagination. Pp. 1 p.l., xxii, [2], 167; 182, [2] ads. Contemporary panelled calf in the Cambridge style, spine with blind rules between raised bands, new label. Binding rubbed at extremities, head and foot of spine a bit eroded, short (1") split to upper front joint, but overall a very good copy. First published in 1697, Humphrey Prideaux's Life Of Mahomet was a popular work, passing through three editions in two years. The author's unflattering account of the life and teachings of Muhammad, whom he terms "the famous impostor", is contrasted with the "Holy Religion" of Christianity, which he argues is free from the "Marks and Properties of Imposture". Rather than simply a biography of the Prophet, the book is primarily intended as a polemical work designed to defend Christianity against the attacks of the deists.
