FIRST EDITION 1814, 4to, approximately 295 x 210 mm, 10½ x 8¼ inches, engraved frontispiece and 4 engraved plates, of which 1 of diamonds hand coloured, 2 large folding hand coloured maps, 1 of Mysore and the other of The Circars, plus 5 diagrams in the text, pages: xi, [1], 462, tables of the thermometer and barometer as observed in different parts of the peninsula of Hindostan (pages 446-460), rebound in full red morocco with decorative gilt band to edges of covers enclosing a narrow patterned border with small corner ornaments, gilt raised bands to spine, gilt decoration in 4 compartments, gilt lettering in the other 2, new endpapers. Pale triangular stain to frontispiece and title page on top inner corner, quite unobtrusive, persisting faintly through prelim pages, plates 2, 4 and 5 lightly browned in the margins and with same pale damp stain to upper inner corner, damp stain showing slightly more on plate 4 and text pages adjacent to it, neat old repair to fore-edge margin of plate 4, not affecting image, folding map trimmed to lower margin, affecting publishers details, a few text pages lightly browned in upper margin. A very good tight copy in an handsome modern binding, housed in a custom made sturdy cloth slipcase. Benjamin Heyne, M.D. F.L.S., (1770-1819), was a Scottish surgeon, naturalist and botanist, member of the Asiatic Society of Calcutta and the Learned Societies of Bombay, Berlin, &c. and surgeon and naturalist on the establishment of Fort St. George.
