A complete set of this important Anglo-Boer War history -- seven volumes in publisher's original red cloth bindings with gilt lettering at spines. All text blocks clean and secure in their bindings; some superficial soiling and uneven fading at spines. OCLC 2326904 Cloth worn/chipped at spine ends; cloth torn at head of Volume 1. All maps bound in and in pockets present and in very good condition, except for general South Africa map in Volume 1 which is lacking. The Times History of the War in South Africa was developed on a well established foundation. The Times had several correspondants in South Africa and were well positioned to acquire information on the inner history of the strategies and tactics of the campaign. As soon as The Times, with its reputation for impartiality, proposed doing a history of the war and appointed L.S. Amery, its chief correspondant in South Africa, as its editor, there was a disposition amonst higher authorities and amongst regimental officers to assist in the task. The first volume presents the history of the political disputes between Great Britain and the South African Republic with excellent judgment and clarity. The second volume opens with the history of the actual campaign and carries forth to the events of the "Black Week" with its triple defeats at Stormberg, Magersfontein and Colenso. The third covers the ground from the decision to send out Lord Roberts to the occupation of Bloemfontein, etc. All received wide readership and praise from both civilian readers and from the soldiers themselves. The ease with which the writers unravel their intricate story and present the varying drama of the war reveals literary skill of the highest order, and marks the books for historical merit for generations to come. PROVENANCE: From the collection of James Hennen Jennings (1854-1920), a mining engineer, born at Hawesville, KY. After attending private schools in London and Derbyshire, England, Jennings returned to Kentucky and set up a lumber business, but soon wanted to further his engineeering education. He graduated from the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University in 1877 with the degree C.E. Jennings then headed West and worked in gold and quicksilver mines in California for the next ten years. In 1887 he went to Venezuela for another mining job. Finally, his talents as an innovative mining engineer, took him to South Africa. During 1889-1905 he was consulting engineer of H. Eckstein, in Johannesburg, and Wemher Beit, in London. Jennings was chiefly responsible for the development and expansion of their mines, employing the most technologically advanced methods and equipment available in the day. In the rough and tumble of South Africa, he managed to keep out of John Hays Hammond's conspiracy to overthrow Kruger's government and to earn a fortune (the equivalent of about 10 million pounds in 2014 dollars) before he returned to America in 1905, settling in Washington, DC. Volume I - 1899-1900. Volume II - 1899-1900. Volume III - 1899-1900. Volume IV - 1899-1902. Volume V - 1900-1902. Volume VI - 1900. Volume VII - 1899-1902, Index, etc. .
