Projecting its focus forward into the 21st century, this science-fiction novel envisions the time when a New World has been created upon the ruins of present-day society. After the "Great Death" brought about by nuclear weapons, the descendants of the survivors have finally established a global Utopia. Martin Lindley is the only member of the Old World who has miraculously been kept alive in a comatose state, and the scientists have succeeded in rejuvenating him at an age of more than 100 years.
People's interest in Martin is understandably great as he tells them first-hand about conditions in the 20th century - meanwhile learning to his astonishment about the New World of Humanism of the 21st. Respect for the human individual has at last become the dominant force in world society, governing the conduct of all affairs. The collective shock of nuclear near-extinction has forced men into creating the kind of society that conforms to the highest ideals of humanity's past. Martin discovers many new inventions and social arrangements that amaze him - as well as an undercurrent of discontent with a society in which all problems have been solved.
