About This Item

London: Century Publishing, 1982. Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. When a trip into the middle of Africa is still something of an adventure, it is astonishing to think that over a century ago a lady of solid Victorian upbringing decided ... to embark on an extraordinary journey 1,000 miles up the Nile -- in a wooden dahabeeyah. Amelia Edwards embarked on this voyage full of unrestrained enthusiasm for Egypt and a compulsive interest in all its archaeological treasures. The Egypt she saw was little changed since Pharonic times; the people living lives regulated by the seasons, unaltered for thousands of years, the pyramids and temples unrestored and for the most part unexplored. She describes in graphic detail the splendours of the Great Pyramid, the wonder at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings at Thebes .... Her account of this voyage is written with an artist's eye for local colour and is crammed with lively anecdotes ...." First Published in 1877. This edition published in 1982; 1985 reprint thus. Includes Edwards' 1888 Preface to the Second Edition and Quentin Crewe's 1982 Introduction. About 75 b&w illustrations. Trade paperback in very good condition with mild wear, spine creasing, and a minor reading slant. Firm binding. No markings.

About Pulp & Circumstance

Welcome to Pulp & Circumstance on Biblio. Once a brick and mortar bookseller, I am pleased that I can now offer scarce and/or collectible books and other items via this platform.

P&C strives to ensure that all items are clean and fairly described. Packages will be wrapped with care and dispatched as soon as feasible, usually on the next business day.

We do not use stock photos. All our photos are of the actual item offered for sale. We try to include the publishers' own descriptions of content by including photos of dust jacket flaps and back covers so far as they seem useful, and we also use photos to show material flaws where we can.

The "Pulp & Circumstance" watermark you might notice in some of our photos does not, of course, appear on any of the items themselves.

Please note that the colour in our photos often fails to come out right. The hue shifts a bit due to the limitations of our equipment, the lighting in our workshop, and of course my own lack of photographic expertise.

Shipping costs per book are always cheaper when more than one book is sent in the same package. Read more about shipping charges in "Terms of Sale" below.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have by email. We will usually respond within 24 hours. Happy browsing!
